7 Trends Shaping IP Licensing in 2026

I've spent 35+ years structuring licensing deals across entertainment, consumer products, MedTech, and digital markets. In this eBook, I break down what's actually happening in the market right now β€” and what it means for inventors and IP owners who are ready to move.

$69.9B U.S. IP licensing market in 2026
7.77% Annual patent licensing growth through 2035
39% Of corporations now actively monetizing IP

"Licensing is no longer just for Fortune 500 companies with armies of IP attorneys. The infrastructure for smaller IP owners to license their innovations is better today than it's ever been. The question isn't whether the market can accommodate you β€” it's whether your IP is positioned to compete."

If you own intellectual property β€” a patent, a technology, a brand, or a trade secret β€” 2026 might be one of the best years you've had to turn that IP into real income. The market is growing, the deal landscape is broadening, and licensing is no longer just for Fortune 500 companies with armies of IP attorneys.

That said, what's working is shifting. The licensing deals getting done today look different from the ones that closed five years ago. New industries are opening up, new deal structures are emerging, and some of the old playbooks are getting stale.

I've spent more than 35 years in licensing β€” structuring deals across entertainment, consumer products, medical technology, and digital markets. In this eBook, I'm going to walk you through the seven trends I'm watching most closely in 2026, what they mean for inventors and IP owners, and β€” most importantly β€” how to position yourself to take advantage of them.

Trend #1: The Patent Licensing Market Is Growing β€” and Smaller Players Are Getting In

Here's the big picture first. The global patent licensing market was valued at $2.59 billion in 2025 and is projected to reach $5.48 billion by 2035. But here's what I think is the most important development for the inventors and entrepreneurs reading this: the market isn't just growing at the top. Digital platforms and streamlined deal processes are making it easier for smaller players β€” startups, independent inventors, solo IP owners β€” to participate in licensing deals that used to be the exclusive territory of large corporations...

Trend #2: AI IP Is the Hottest Category in Licensing Right Now

If there's one trend dominating licensing conversations in 2026, it's artificial intelligence IP. And I don't just mean AI companies licensing their software β€” I mean the explosion of AI-related deal activity across virtually every industry. In life sciences alone, the pace of AI deals has been remarkable. In late 2025, Eli Lilly announced a landmark AI supercomputer project in collaboration with NVIDIA. AstraZeneca agreed to acquire Modella AI...

Trend #3: MedTech Licensing Is Accelerating...

The medical device licensing market grew by 10% in a single year β€” and that was before the current wave of AI-driven healthcare investment kicked into full gear. What we're seeing now is a convergence of factors that makes 2026 one of the best windows I've seen for MedTech innovators to get deals done...
